Much like countless other Milwaukee events, this year’s Juneteenth Day Parade and Street Festival has been canceled due to COVID-19 concerns. Though a Freedom Ballexpected to take place sometime between October and December—may eventually serve as something of a replacement, a Milwaukee organization is planning to give people a way to celebrate the June 19 holiday in a safe and socially distant way.

A non-profit called Safe & Sound, which strives to “build safe and empowered neighborhoods,” is presenting a Virtual Juneteenth Celebration. From 12-2 p.m. on Friday, June 19, Safe & Sound plans to “celebrate history, culture, and freedom through arts like music, poetry, and dance.” At that time, viewers are encouraged to watch the “Virtual Takeover” on Zoom. The organization is also seeking pre-recorded performances from artists who are interested in being part of this unique Juneteenth event. Those interested in taking part can fill out an application here.

Whether you’re looking to celebrate or you want to take part, don’t miss Safe & Sound’s Virtual Juneteenth Celebration on June 19.
